UNACTO Youth & Education Committee (2006-2007 Report)
The Toronto Region Branch is the largest of UNA-Canada’s branches and has been providing information and education about the United Nations to the people of Toronto for many years.
The United Nations Association in Canada - Toronto Region Branch has now moved to a virtual office environment staffed by virtual volunteers. We are able to answer all inquiries through email. The Branch contributes to the local community in a variety of ways, including raising funds, providing guest speakers and hosting community events to raise awareness about social issues.
Youth and Education Committee
The Youth & Education Committee is made up of volunteers who are committed to teaching youth about the United Nations and global issues from a Canadian perspective.
The Committee recognizes and values the importance of educating Canadians about the world in which we live. Through its programs and community involvement, the Youth & Education Committee strives to draw links between local and global concerns, as well as provide youth with interactive learning opportunities that challenge them to develop their own ideas and opinions about global issues.
Sport-in-a-box
Sport-in-a-Box is one initiative currently being undertaken by the Youth & Education Committee. It’s a program that inspires young Canadians through the power of sport to engage with their community in physical fitness and health activities, as they learn about global issues. The primary objective is to foster and enhance children’s passion for physical activity, encouraging healthy lifestyles for life. Sport-in-a-Box was designed by the UNAC national office in Ottawa. By 2006, the program had expanded to 14 diverse regions across Canada.
More than 14 different schools and community centres across Canada were connected through the exchange of boxes. On November 2, 2006, the Youth and Education Committee implemented the Sport-in-a-Box program at Seneca Hill Private School in Toronto under the supervision of UNACTO Vice President, Aqeel Saeid, Ph.D. The School swapped a box with a school in Manitoba on Friday, December 1st, 2006. Youel Serkis,
UNACTO President, also attended and participated in the swapping of the boxes. Students were presented with UNACTO volunteer cards as a token of appreciation for their participation in the flag raising ceremony On October 24, 2006 and the Sport-in-a-Box program. On March 15, 2007, new sessions of Sport-in-a-Box was started at Seneca Hill Private School under the supervision of Aqeel Saeid and a second box was sent to a British Columbia school on June 11, 2007.

Healthy Children, Healthy Communities
The United Nations Association in Canada’s Healthy Children, Healthy Communities (HC2) project is a community-based research project which aims to identify the top health priorities of children between the ages of 9 to 12 years old.
From January 12th to 16th, 2007, students from Seneca Hill Private School took part in the Healthy Children, Healthy Communities survey project under the supervision of Aqeel Saeid. This was a great opportunity to gain valuable research data that will enable community-based organizations to provide programs which better serve the needs of children in the local community. It was also a good opportunity for UNACTO volunteers to enhance their research skills. For further information we invite you to visit the following link

Hi there. I’m a teacher in Brampton and I’m looking for activities and/or field trips related to the grade 6 Trading Partners unit. What kinds of opportunities are available for schools with the UN in Toronto?
THanks,
SHeri Nevill
